REFINISH TECHNOLOGY
The Evolution of Polishing Compounds
Automotive polishing compounds have evolved significantly in abrasive shape, particle size, carrier technology, cutting performance, and finishing quality.
TACSYSTEM developed the REFINISH series to move beyond conventional petroleum-based polishing compounds and create a more efficient water-based paint-correction system.
1ST GENERATION — TRADITIONAL ABRASIVES
First-generation polishing compounds used irregularly shaped abrasive particles ranging approximately from 70–20 μm.
During polishing, these particles could break down irregularly, potentially creating additional fine surface defects as the correction process progressed.
As a result, detailers traditionally needed to perform multiple polishing stages, gradually progressing from aggressive cutting compounds to increasingly finer polishing products.
This traditional approach could require three, four, or more stages before achieving the desired level of refinement, and swirl marks or polishing defects could still remain on the surface.
2ND GENERATION — REFINED ABRASIVE TECHNOLOGY
Second-generation compounds were developed to provide greater control over the abrasive breakdown process.
These compounds adopted more uniform abrasive particles, described as having an approximately octagonal structure, with particle sizes ranging from approximately 20–2 μm.
The more controlled abrasive geometry helped reduce unnecessary swirl marks and secondary defects compared with earlier compound technology.
However, both first- and second-generation polishing compounds were commonly based on petroleum-derived carrier systems.
3RD GENERATION — TACSYSTEM REFINISH
Advanced Water-Based Abrasive Technology
TACSYSTEM developed its third-generation REFINISH R1, R2, and R3 water-based polishing system to provide a more efficient approach to professional paint correction.
The REFINISH abrasive structure is designed around a multi-faceted geometry that can be represented as a triangular profile in two dimensions.
This engineered abrasive structure provides effective and efficient cutting action during the initial polishing stage.
As polishing progresses and moisture gradually evaporates, the cutting action of the REFINISH compound decreases in a controlled manner.
Toward the end of the working cycle, the resin system helps surround the abrasive particles, reducing uncontrolled abrasive action and allowing the surface to be progressively refined.
This technology enables the REFINISH system to transition efficiently from strong initial correction to precise final refinement, helping achieve excellent clarity and gloss with an optimized polishing process.
FINE CUT + FINAL FINISH
Fine Correction with Exceptional Finishing Performance
REFINISH3 is designed not only to enhance gloss but also to remove the fine paint defects that remain during the final stage of paint correction.
It is particularly effective for correcting:
- P2500 sanding marks
- Fine swirl marks
- Holograms
- Fine marring
- Light localized paint defects
- Minor water spots
- Light correctable scratches
- Fine polishing marks from previous correction stages
When used after REFINISH2, REFINISH3 precisely refines the remaining defects while further increasing gloss, clarity, depth, and reflectivity.
For vehicles with paint already in relatively good condition, REFINISH3 may also be used as a one-step light polishing solution when aggressive correction is not required.
MAXIMUM GLOSS & CLARITY
Reveal the True Depth and Reflection of Automotive Paint
Exceptional automotive gloss is not simply about making the surface shine.
Fine swirl marks, holograms, haze, and microscopic marring scatter reflected light, reducing the clarity and sharpness of the paint finish.
REFINISH3 precisely refines these fine surface imperfections, helping create a smoother and more uniform surface that allows light to reflect more evenly.
The result is enhanced color definition, greater visual depth, sharper reflections, and an exceptionally clean high-gloss finish.
AFTER REFINISH2
The Final Step to a Flawless, High-Gloss Finish
REFINISH2 provides medium correction and refinement, removing intermediate paint defects while already achieving a high level of gloss.
However, depending on paint type, color, hardness, pad selection, machine, and polishing technique, extremely fine holograms, haze, or polishing marks may remain.
REFINISH3 is designed to remove these final imperfections and maximize surface clarity and reflectivity.
This final refinement stage is particularly valuable on dark-colored vehicles and finishes where the highest possible level of visual clarity is desired.
WHY POLISH AUTOMOTIVE PAINT?
Restore Clarity by Correcting Defects in the Clear Coat
A typical automotive paint system consists of several layers, including primer, color coat, and clear coat.
The clear coat forms the outer protective layer and plays a major role in the gloss, depth, and reflectivity of automotive paint.
Over time, improper washing, environmental contamination, oxidation, water spots, swirl marks, and scratches can create imperfections in the clear-coat surface.
These defects scatter reflected light instead of allowing it to reflect uniformly, causing the paint to appear dull, hazy, swirled, or scratched.
Professional paint correction removes or reduces a controlled amount of the affected clear-coat surface to minimize correctable defects and create a smoother, more uniform finish.
As the final polishing stage, REFINISH3 precisely refines the surface to maximize clarity, depth, reflectivity, and gloss.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
- Shake well before use.
- Make sure the paint surface is clean, cool, and free of loose contamination before polishing.
- Always begin with a new or thoroughly cleaned polishing pad. A contaminated or excessively loaded pad may introduce additional surface defects.
- Apply an appropriate amount of REFINISH3 evenly across the face of the polishing pad.
- Spread the product over the working area before beginning the main polishing cycle.
- Work the product using a rotary or dual-action (DA) polisher with an appropriate polishing or finishing pad. REFINISH3 may also be used by hand where appropriate.
- Polish the section using controlled movements until the desired level of refinement, clarity, and gloss has been achieved.
- Remove remaining polish residue with a clean microfiber towel.
- Inspect the surface under suitable lighting for remaining holograms, swirl marks, haze, or other fine defects.
- Repeat where necessary until the desired final finish has been achieved.
TIP: Pad cleanliness is especially important during final finishing. Paint residue, spent abrasive, or contamination accumulated in the pad can introduce fine marring or haze. Clean or replace the polishing pad regularly for the best possible finish.
ROTARY + DUAL ACTION POLISHING
REFINISH3 can be used with both rotary and dual-action (DA) polishers.
For maximum gloss and clarity, select a polishing or finishing pad appropriate for the paint condition and hardness.
Where additional correction is required, an appropriate polishing pad can increase defect-removal performance. When maximum refinement and gloss are the priority, pair REFINISH3 with a softer finishing pad to take full advantage of its finishing characteristics.
RECOMMENDED REFINISH WORKFLOW
CUT. REFINE. FINISH.
The TACSYSTEM REFINISH system provides a progressive paint-correction process designed to efficiently move from heavy defect removal to exceptional final refinement.
REFINISH1 — HEAVY CORRECTION
Designed for severe oxidation, heavy swirl marks, sanding marks, water spots, and deeper correctable paint defects.
REFINISH2 — MEDIUM CORRECTION & REFINEMENT
Designed for P1500 sanding marks, holograms, swirl marks, moderate defects, and marring remaining after REFINISH1 while significantly improving surface clarity and gloss.
REFINISH3 — FINAL FINISH
Designed for P2500 sanding marks, fine swirl marks, holograms, fine marring, and final surface refinement while maximizing paint clarity, reflectivity, depth, and gloss.
Not every vehicle requires all three stages. The appropriate REFINISH process should be selected according to paint condition, defect severity, paint hardness, pad and machine selection, and the desired final result.
